Hi Brenda, I'm so glad you posted your message. I am 37 years old and started dieting when I was 9. I stopped dieting when I turned 33, and I have (at a size 18) never been happier. May I share my experience with you? *I wish I had never started dieting because for every diet I went on I ended up gaining back more than I ever lost. *I am more conscious than ever of how every image we see on TV, in magazines and newspapers reflects an unrealistic body image standard set by our culture. We are all deeply affected by this whether we are conscious of it or not. *Dieting leads to food obsession and preoccupation with one's appearance. I much prefer to invest my energy in accepting myself, rather than rejecting myself.
I can tell you are a thoughtful, sensitive young person and you have alot going for you. I hope you will feel OK rejecting the pressure from others to change your body to meet an outside standard. I would recommend eating when you are hungry, making the most nutritious choices possible but not assigning moral value to food, e.g. eating cake is "bad." Also, definitely find physical activiites you enjoy and engage in them often. The benefits of regular activity will pay off for years to come.
