This is a constant battle for me. I have read Munter/Hirschman and Geneen Roth (I even went to her seminar) and through the support of a therapist and women's groups dealing with food/eating/body image issues, I try to live by their recommendations. One of the hardest for me is to eat and be seen. I just feel like people constantly judge what I eat and think "she wouldn't be so fat if she didn't eat that." This is reinforced by comments heard when I or other large people eat in public and often takes the voice of my stepmother (you'd think going on age 32, the wicked stepmother would have less sway over me now). I have really been trying to work on this one. I am better about eating in public and with my husband and friends. It is still hard with some family members and alone in public at times. Just in the last week, I lied to justify eating a food bar at 11am by telling the person who saw me eating it that I hadn't had breakfast. I had had a light breakfast several hours before and was hungry again. But I thought people would judge me for eating in public and not at an appointed meal time. I have low body sugar (which runs on both sides of my family) and feel much better if I eat often (not full meals, but small amounts of food). I sometimes think that even that some people think I use as an excuse to snack.
Despite a lot of work on these issues, eating in public and in front of particular people is still really hard for me. Not all the time. But often it is. I realize that you are right that often the people could care less and really are not keeping track of what you eat. With my head, I realize that this is foolish behavior and silly to think that people judge me for what I eat or more importantly to CARE about what they think. I know food is fuel and I need it to be healthy and alive and that I have just as much right as anyone to eat. But my heart is still fragile on this and sometimes gives in and "justifies" what I'm eating (which 99% will be something healthy if I'm eating it in public anyway).
Does anyone have suggestions for things that help them get over such feelings?
